Banding a Cormorant at Dore Lake, SK (Summer 2007)

October

> Oct. 7 – Tuesday, Day 4 – The Environment

  • I’m looking forward to teaching you these next several weeks
  • Today I started class by introducing myself and having all of you introduce yourselves
  • I went over some of my expectations in class
  • We came to a definition of what the environment means and used J. Stan Rowe’s quote about the Ecosphere to add to our understanding
  • I showed a powerpoint of my summer at Dore Lake, working with pelicans and cormorants. This demonstrated how my experiences have shaped how I think of the environment and this experience at Dore Lake helped me see how we need to be stewards of the environment and take care of it
  • I handed out a sheet of questions about the environment
  • Due next class, Thursday: the environment questions sheet
  • > Oct. 9 – Thursday, Day 6 – The Ecosystems and Ecozones in Saskatchewan

  • I introduced this blog to everyone, hopefully it can help you out!
  • I did a homework check on the environment questions sheet that was due for today and we went over it together
  • Ecosystem notes
  • We talked about how an ecosystem is made up of “biotic” (living) and “abiotic” (non-living) components. But the things that humans can create (ex. advanced robots, robotic bears, train tracks, etc., haha) are artificial and do not fit the conventional classification of “biotic” and “abiotic” (as well as genetically modified plants and animals) but dead animals are still considered “biotic”
  • We watched “A Tribute to Saskatchewan” from Youtube <http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=QnMozUBybuk> and identified biotic and abiotic components in the video
  • Ecozone notes
  • Woohoo!: This weekend I’ll be helping my biology friend Adam trap saw-whet owls, I’ll let you know how it goes
  • Due next class, Thursday: make a comment on my blog and write a question that you have about the environment
