Subunits Question

11 09 2008

hey all, some of you were wondering what the different subunits were for proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. PLATO might have been a bit confusing on this point, so here are the answers:

The subunits of proteins are amino acids (so that means that proteins are made up of amino acids). You might have notes from PLATO about amino groups and carboxyl groups… don’t worry about these. They are what amino acids consist of, so they are like sub-subunits of proteins if that makes any sense.

The subunits of carbohydrates are monosaccharides, so again this just means that carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides.

Then for lipids, there are two subunits: a glycerol backbone, and fatty acids.

Good luck studying!
